It's been more than half a year since Pfizer's patent on Viagra expired. But that hasn't stopped the company from bringing down prices. "It is a win-win situation," says Michael Schuette, a professor at Harvard Medical School who has studied how insurance companies and insurers are treating the drug.
The new price is not without controversy, but the latest price hikes have been offset by new drugs introduced in the past several years that have been significantly cheaper than Viagra. For instance, a recent report from Pfizer found that Viagra cost more to treat erectile dysfunction than the other two drug treatments. That's because the drug works in a way that improves blood flow to the penis.
The new prices are expected to be announced by the Food and Drug Administration this week, as well as the FDA's announcement last year about Viagra's marketing and regulatory approval. The FDA is also working on new drugs to combat a growing public concern over counterfeit drugs.
The drug is also the subject of a separate, long-awaited rule to help the public understand how insurance plans can help pay for the drugs. The rule also applies to all drug plans that are based on a prior authorization, rather than a specific insurance plan, says David A. Gartner, an associate professor at Harvard Health. "It's an ongoing process," he says. "The drug approval process has been streamlined for the past several years. There's no time or form to wait until the drug approval process is complete."
The new rules have prompted some insurance companies to increase their price caps to help pay for the new drugs, he says. In the past, insurers had to cover Viagra's erectile dysfunction drug, but the new rule does not apply to generic competitors. The new rules will reduce the cost of the drugs. "These are not new drugs," Gartner says.

Shelby M. Rosenbaum, Forbes.com, June 19, 2003.The most common reason for a price increase for a prescription drug is because the drug is a new product, because the manufacturer wants to make the drug more appealing to consumers. This is often a reason why the drug is expensive and why the drug company is paying out of pocket.
But it is not always the case. The FDA has been investigating whether a drug manufacturer can make its products more appealing to consumers. The FDA has also found that generic drugs have less competition and less safety problems than their brand name counterparts.
In some cases, the new drug companies that are supposed to make the drugs more appealing to consumers might not be getting the same benefit of the old drugs.
If a company makes its products more appealing to consumers, it could save the company money. The cost of a drug may be the same as if it were less expensive but still be a factor.
However, the drug manufacturer has no right to be reimbursed for its costs.
Forbes.com encourages consumers to call 800-FDA-1033 to request an interview. The company offers a free 30-minute free assessment.

Last year, the FDA announced an investigation into Pfizer's drug safety and effectiveness, but the agency is still investigating other cases.
The FDA had to wait for the drug's approval because it could not find any evidence that the drug caused severe adverse events like angina, heart attack and stroke. But an FDA panel of experts concluded that the drugs caused severe events and that the drugs were not causing the symptoms.
The FDA's investigation came as a major political scandal. A Senate investigation into the issue was halted last week after the FDA concluded that Pfizer had not adequately informed consumers about the safety of the drug, or how the drug was made, and whether its manufacturer knew of the risks.
